WHAT IS THE TIBETAN WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION?
TWA was founded in 1959 to commemorate the Tibetan women who gave their lives to defend the Potala Palace from the Chinese military invasion. Headquartered in Dharamsala, India with 36 branches and over 6000 members, TWA is dedicated to helping Tibetan women and raising international support for a free Tibet. TWA has brought media attention to abuses faced by Tibetan women in Chinese-occupied Tibet such as forced sterilizations and abortions, infanticide and near annihilation of religious studies for Buddhist nuns. TWA focuses on cultural preservation by supporting the elderly, children's education, religious studies for women, improving women's access to health care, child care and education, and the distribution of sponsorship money.
